Heather Mewshaw is an award-winning, professionally certified ASL Interpreter with over 20 years of hands-on experience in sign language interpreting and administrative roles.
Since 2007, Heather has owned and operated Chesapeake Interpreting LLC and conducted work in the areas of sign language interpreting, administration of contracts, scheduling and coordination of interpreters, and broadening business opportunities. Previously, Heather worked as a staff interpreter for several sign language interpreting agencies in the Mid-Atlantic region. For two years, Heather was a staff interpreter at Gallaudet University, the world's premier university for Deaf, hard-of-hearing and Deafblind students. At Gallaudet, she provided interpreting services to the Gallaudet community, developed educational materials, coordinated interpreting services for large meetings or events on campus and mentored visiting student interpreters.
Heather is an RID certified interpreter, holding three interpreter certifications, and a graduate of University of Baltimore's Corporate Communications program. She is the recipient of several awards: NASA's 2017 External Support Award for her "customer service excellence" within a team and RID's 2012 Region II President's Choice Award in recognition of her "extraordinary contributions to the Potomac Chapter of RID (PCRID)."
Because of her experiences growing up with Deaf parents and relatives, Heather is deeply connected to the Deaf community and realizes that working as an ASL interpreter requires sincere appreciation and profound understanding of the communities we serve. By utilizing her extensive knowledge and experience, Heather's goal is to provide top-notch sign language interpreting services in a variety of settings.
